Kopački rit is one of four Ramsar wetland sites in Croatia and it is also included in the list of Important Bird Areas (IBAs).In ornithological terms, it is one of the richest areas in both Croatia and Europe. Rich bird life includes the largest number of nesting sites of the White-Tailed Eagle in this part of Europe, Black Storks, Ferruginous Ducks , Egrets, Buzzards, Sakers, the most numerous colonies of Cormorants and Grey Herons in Croatia. The largest number of species may be seen during spring and autumn migrations and again in summer. The number of species is less during winter, but still, you can watch tens of thousands of geese and ducks arriving from West Siberia. Until now, 295 bird species were recorded, of which 144 species are permanent or temporary resident nesting birds of Kopački rit.

When: Early in the morning or at dusk, part of the day when the birds are the most active.
Birdwatching is possible throughout the year but the recommended periods are April – June and August – October.
