TASTING WINE HISTORY

TASTING WINE HISTORY

WINE HERITAGE & STORYTELLING: The duchess of medieval Omiš will take you on a walk through the town and into a wine story you’ve never heard before.
The experience ends with a tasting of the fruits of the vine and the hands of local winemakers from the Omiš region

On this unique guided walk through the town of Omiš, your host is none other than a noblewoman from the medieval Kačić family—rulers of the town that once served as a stronghold of fearsome pirates. She is the guardian of Omiš’s past—and of its fine wine. In her company, you’ll step back through centuries, all the way to the distant lands where the grapevine was first tamed.

The route leads through the history of wine and the town itself—from Illyrian and Roman Omiš, an ancient shipwreck, through medieval maritime routes and vineyards, to Napoleonic times and the present day.

In 1772, Italian travel writer Alberto Fortis visited Omiš and wrote:

“The Muscat and aged prošek of Omiš, and in general all wines made here with care from ripe and rested grapes, deserve a place at every feast. If they were better known, we would surely see them chosen over many foreign wines that cost the state a significant amount each year.”

Omiš also holds an incredible story about a centuries-old grape variety that nearly vanished from this land, only to return home from America. It is, of course, Tribidrag (also known as Zinfandel, Primitivo, Kratošija, Crljenak, Pribidrag)—the ancient parent of Plavac Mali, another native Dalmatian grape.

🍇 Join the duchess of Omiš and discover a story of wine deeply intertwined with the people, land, and sea across the millennia.
The walk ends with a guided tasting of wines from a local Omiš winery, including a dessert wine (prošek), a liqueur based on grape brandy (loza), and Dalmatian bites: bread, olive oil, cheese, and local cured meats.
